When working in any industry that involves food preparation and consumption, it is a legal requirement to receive and stay up to date with food safety training. Below we explain why food safety training is important.
UK law stipulates that all businesses working in the food industry undertake food safety training. This ensures the safe handling, preparation and storage of food. It also teaches the correct cleaning of food prep areas, how to avoid cross contamination and how to minimise food waste.
Prevent cross contamination
Cross contamination is the biggest cause of food poisoning and allergic reactions. This can be avoided by following strict food preparation rules and keeping food prep areas clean at all times. One example of cross contamination in the kitchen is when a chopping board is used to cut meat, and the same board is then used to cut vegetables. All chopping boards should be designated for meat, fish or vegetables and thoroughly cleaned after use.

Minimise food waste

This is obviously bad for business and will end up costing you more money in the long run, not to mention the negative impact upon health. Food safety training gives you the knowledge to store food correctly which will reduce food waste.
